There are a few reasons why you might need a lactation consultant.
- I’ve never breastfed before and I want to make sure the baby is getting enough milk.
- Your baby is having difficulty latching
- Your nipples are sore or damaged
- Your baby is not back to birth weight at two weeks
- Your baby is fussy, gassy, and pulling off of the breast
- You are concerned about your milk supply (too little, too much)
- To help prepare for going back to work
Many insurance companies do offer lactation consultations as a benefit. Please check with your insurance company to see if that is offered under your plan.
At the present time, we are contracted with many insurance companies. Not all insurance companies offer contracts to IBCLCs.

A consultation varies in length depending on the issue/concern and the baby. On average, a consultation lasts about 1.5 hours.
- If possible, try to feed your baby about an hour or more prior to the consultation. That will prevent the baby from being too full, refusing to eat during the consultation, or being too hungry and frantic.
- If you have questions about your pump, have it clean and available for your consult. Be sure to have any additional flange sizes clean and available also.
- Have good records showing the baby’s feeding pattern and the number of wet and dirty diapers for the last few days. Have a list of the baby’s weights since birth and the date of that weight.
- Have goals for what you want to achieve. This will allow the Lactation Consultant to assist you in planning ways to achieve your goals.
